The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic human rights advocacy group, has called for compensation for the Fulani victims of reprisal attacks carried out following the attack on worshippers at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State.

The Owo church attack angered locals who went on reprisal attacks, targeting some Fulani people in the community.

However, on Tuesday, August 9, the suspected attackers of the Catholic church were named and they were from Kogi State.

Following this revelation, MURIC’s director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Thursday, August 11, urged Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to compensate the Fulani victims.

He said: “Those who lost property should be compensated. Some form of relief should also be provided for families of those who were killed among them.”

MURIC also appealed to Nigerians to be circumspect, “to avoid jumping to conclusions and, most importantly, to stop ethnic profiling and hasty judgment.

“There are criminals in all tribes just as there are decent people everywhere. Tribes do not commit crimes. It is individuals who do,” the MURIC director added in his statement.
